At Computex Hitachi-LG officially unveiled the world’s first hybrid SSD / ODD drive for use in small form factor netbooks, set-top boxes and even tablets. . The device is the first product of its type and will ship in August. The first generation of HyDrives will be available with 32GB or 64GB of storage. Next year a version of the HyDrive with 256GB of SSD storage inside will be unveiled.
The HyDrive essentially enables a total storage solution on the PC using the advantages of three storage devices types – conventional hard drives, solid-state disks and optical drives – without the need for system manufacturers to modify package constraints in order to accommodate all three storage components into a single mobile design.
The SSD component has a peak read speed of 175MB per second and writes at a maximum 60MB per second; Hitachi-LG claims it can be 30 to 60 percent faster than a rotating hard drive for booting up and loading apps
