Today NVIDIA is launching their newest Fermi family GPU, the GeForce GTX 460.The GeForce GTX 460 we’ll be showing you today is actually based on a new-class of Fermi-based GPU, the GF104. It packs seven Streaming Multiprocessors for a total of 336 CUDA Cores and 56 Texture Units. a GTX 460 has more than half the horsepower of a GTX 480 at less than half the price. NVIDIA compares it to a “Hunter” class unit – though lighter and less powerful than the “Tank” (GTX 480),
NVIDIA likened the GTX 480 to the “Tank” character archetype found in many MMORPGs. The GTX 480 is big and expensive, representing some of the most powerful characters around. The GTX 460, according to NVIDIA, is more like a “Hunter” class. It is smaller, leaner, less complicated, and more approachable. GeForce GTX 460 ships with a 1,024MB framebuffer connected to a 256-bit-wide memory-bus and to 32 raster back-ends (ROPs) just like GeForce GTX 465. Commonality extends to having 512KB of L2 cache supporting GPU operations across GPCs.
