At CES 2010, Acer announces the availability of the Aspire AS5740. It is a part Acer’s Gemstone family, or rather, desktop replacements that are likely to remain tethered to a desk somewhere. The AS5740-6979 is the first in the Acer family to use a Core i5-430M (2.26GHz) processor, which is based on Intel’s latest dual core technology, with HyperThreading.
Being able to choose from Intel Core i3-330M (2.13GHz) and Core i5-430M (2.26GHz) processors as well as ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 or ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 graphics, you are able to achieve a careful balance of performance and portability wherever you are.
The Aspire AS5740G-6979 which ships with 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive. Sadly, it only has a DVD-RW drive, making it more of a content-creation machine than a mobile home theater.
âAs games become more lifelike and movies push the limits on special effects, more powerful and intelligent performance is required for a truly dynamic computing experience,â said Acer America senior product marketing manager Preeta Anil, in a statement. âConsumers wanting to enjoy all the latest digital media in a mobile platform will appreciate the AS5740 and AS7740 Series.â

The inclusion of a DirectX 11-class discrete graphics chip is another plus, providing good gaming performance and video playback. If you’re in the market for an affordable laptop with the latest features, and you don’t mind the deficient audio playback and the lack of Bluetooth support, this “average” machine may be just right”

“In terms of performance its pretty standard for a laptop of this kind and it was able to manage WorldBench 6 scores which can be considered to be just slightly better than the average. If you consider it for gaming then it tends to perform better. Connectivity is average as it puts to use Atheros 802.11n chip but I was surprised to find Bluetooth missing from it as it is ubiquitous in today’s world. Just forgot to mention the price, it is $750 for this baby!!
