“For a dorm room, small apartment, kitchen or other living situation where a TV and computer monitor can easily share the same screen, Samsung’s P2770HD makes a workable go of combining the two. While the lack of some common television frills like a swiveling stand and picture in picture would be welcome, superb image quality, a powerful menu system and an extremely attractive chassis all speak in favor of Samsung’s all-in-one Wunderkind. You’ll certainly pay a small premium over a tunerless 27-inch monitor, but the savings gained from combining two devices into one should justify the expense if you can truly make use of it.”

“As good as movies looked in the Entertainment preset, we found that the Dynamic Contrast preset worked best for movie watching. With Dynamic Contrast on, we only noticed the screen darkening on scenes where the screen is 90 percent black or more, such as the end credits and during fades to black. In the DC preset, blacks looked darker and the colors slightly more full.”

“The Samsung SyncMaster P2770HD is a 27-inch LCD monitor that can also function as a HDTV. Loaded with great looks and performance, it is a solid choice for those in the market for a large monitor. The P2770HD is available for around $450, depending on where you shop, and it is protected by a three-year warranty on parts and labor.”

“As a TV, the P2770HD does pretty well compared with other hybrid monitors, but it can’t compete with the best TVs on the market. The screen’s lack of responsiveness affects picture quality in fast-action scenes and the soft upscaling makes the picture slightly blurred. However, aliasing is reduced, and from a distance of 1.5 to 2 metres, the few defects are not noticeable. All this makes the P2770HD a decent TV for occasional use. Although hybrid monitors are always improving, they still have a long way to go to catch up with TVs. The P2770HD, for example, has just one HDMI port and no Motion Plus technology to keep the picture smooth. Plus, there’s still no USB port for access to videos stored on an external hard drive. Let’s hope the next generation of hybrids can do better.”

“We didn’t notice this shortcoming while playing games or watching movies, because there are few occasions in those scenarios where one color remains static across broad stretches of the display’s borders. It could be a serious problem, however, if you’re trying to match colors while painstakingly editing a photograph. And while we’ve yet to find any TN panel that we could recommend for that type of work, this monitor’s 23-inch cousin performed far better.
