GE CEO Jeff Immelt unveiled a handheld ultrasound machine at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco Tuesday called the Vscan, saying it could become the “stethoscope of the 21st century.” The Vscan features an ultrasound scanner connected via cord to the main unit, transmitting what it sees into the display. Roughly the size of a smart phone, it houses powerful ultrasound technology that can potentially redefine the way doctors examine patients.
The Vscan is aimed in part at primary care doctors, who could use it instead of sending patients to get an ultrasound at a specialist’s office. It could also be used by doctors in remote regions without access to hospital equipment. At the moment, the device is not available commercially in the U.S, as it is typically very long to get an FDA approval. It’s not clear if it is available elsewhere
